Duties of a Forklift Operator
The most common area for forklift operators to be employed are in factories and warehouses. Their responsibilities will consist of the lifting and moving of supplies and loads from one place to another. They must be taught to safely use the forklift controls. Specialized training is a requirement. Drivers should pass a drug test and have a background check.
Performing Checks
OSHA and HRSDC both require forklift operators to carry out daily and pre-shift inspections. Forklift operator training must consist of the correct performance of safety inspections to guarantee optimum functionality. An inspection should also be done at the end of each shift. Regular safety training must be undertaken on a yearly basis.
Unloading and Loading
The forklift driver is tasked with the job of loading and unloading supplies in a timely and safe method. This job also includes the organized stacking of supplies so they are accessible.
Weighing Materials
The responsibilities of a forklift operator can include weighing the materials that are being moved and recording the weights.
Quality Control
The operator of the forklift would be in charge of quality control. They must make sure that goods do not sustain damage during transportation in the warehouse and orders are correct.
Safety Awareness
A responsible forklift driver must have excellent skills in awareness and attention to safety. Drivers should exhibit a high level of concern for the safety of both personnel and pedestrians. The operator must find the safest way to handle difficulties, such as navigating a steep surface with a load. The operator will need to determine the route that is the safest. A driver's training will include learning about the elements that might cause a forklift to tip over. The driver must be extremely familiar with the safety ratings and design of the forklift unit which they are using. A forklift driver must be sensitive to the need for breaks to prevent fatigue. Accidents connected to forklifts are more likely to occur when an operator is exhausted.

Forklift Engines
Forklifts are classed as small-engine vehicles. The engines of the forklift all follow the principles of internal combustion, though the many makes and models of forklift would have a different layout and design. Forklifts are designed more toward generating high torque rather than for speed. They usually are geared to low speeds. The engine runs the forklift's drive wheels. The engine is also needed to lower and lift the forks through a series of chain pulleys. Nearly all modern forklift engines are fueled by propane because they would be used indoors, where gasoline and diesel engines will be inappropriate because of the exhaust they make.
A four-cylinder engine-block is normally found in a forklift. A lot like the engine in small cars, the engines of the forklift have cylinders containing pistons connecting to a camshaft. The head of every cylinder has an exhaust hatch, a spark plug and an exhaust hatch, each of them one-way and spring-loaded.
Engine Function
Propane passes through the opened throttle-plate in a fine spray, when the driver starts up the forklift engine. This fine spray mixes with air coming from the mass air intake prior to moving into the head intake hatches of the cylinder. Every one of the four pistons is staggered to rise in an exact sequence, compressing the mixture of propane and air as every piston rises to the top of the head. With timing which is really precise, the alternator and battery of the engine create an electrical current which passes through the spark plug. The fuel ignites leading to an explosion that drives the piston back down to the bottom of the cylinder, leading to a continuous turning of the camshaft. An air pressure imbalance in the cylinder causes the the exhaust hatch to draw out exhaust as more fuel passes into the cylinder. Propane burns cleaner compared to gasoline and diesel and the exhaust is not as harmful.
