Forklift Truck Training
Operators need to undergo training on an industrial-powered forklift, or lift truck to receive forklift driver certification. The training program must be specific to the forklift attachments and type that you would be using on the job. Training should also reflect the environment wherein you would be working. Forklift safety should be a top priority for both the operator trainee and the trainer.
General Credentials
Before assuming any operator duties, all forklift drivers should undergo training and certification. Basic credentials for operating a forklift include an age minimum of eighteen years and the physical ability to operate and control the unit safely.
Pedestrian Safety
The top concern of any forklift operator must be the safety of pedestrians. Pedestrians in the vicinity of the forklift are at risk of injury or death from getting hit by the machinery or its attachments. Pedestrians must always have the right of way, and forklift operators must honk their horns when working at intersections or crosswalks or near pedestrians.
Weather Conditions
Forklift mishaps often occur on loading docks. These places become dangerous if rain leaks in through open dock doors making the floor very slippery. Wet floor conditions create a hazard and operators need to know possible dangers when working in loading dock areas.
Certification
Certification programs for forklift operators consist of both classroom instruction and practical training which could be tailored for the particular needs of each work environment. Training must be undertaken on the forklift type and attachments that will be utilized by the trainee in the workplace.
Mishaps
On average, there is about one hundred deaths attributed to forklift accidents, while over one hundred thousand are injured by forklifts. The majority of these accidents can be prevented with attention to safety and correct operator training.

Telescopic Forklifts
Telescopic forklifts offer height and versatility. These units are equipped with a pronged lift on an arm which extends over the top of the truck. The arm, or crane, is called a telescopic boom. The boom enables the operator to raise the cargo to great heights while maintaining a high degree of control. Standard forklifts can not move the cargo towards and away from the cab of the forklift, whereas a telescopic forklift can allow that movement. The telescopic forklift is commonly utilized in both construction and agriculture. It is recommended for applications where greater control and lift is necessary.
In situations needing high volume carton handling, hydraulic attachments called forklift carton clamp attachments are recommended. The attachment has arm pads with four way reversible rubber linings which allow the operator to utilize uniform clamping force when picking up a load. It comes with a backrest that protects the loads from damage.
A slip sheet attachment fits onto a slip sheet forklift. It is utilized for storing systems that don't use pallets. The attachment clamps onto the slip sheet and pulls it onto the forklift forks. This type of system is useful for intra-corporate deliveries and for overseas shipments.
A man basket is a lift platform meant specifically to raise workers. The basket attaches to the forks on the forklift, held in with a strap or chain that is to be secured directly to the forklift carriage. The platform has railings to protect the staff from falling to the ground. Brackets on the platform are used for fastening the safety harness of the worker.
